For the more than 26 million Americans diagnosed with or affected by diabetes, having accurate information on the disease is crucial. But the sheer volume of information available can be daunting for patients and caregivers alike. This comprehensive guide provides librarians and library users with background on key diabetes concepts, encompassing reliable print and electronic resources, including hard-to-find periodicals and audiovisual sources. Each chapter in this guide presents an overview and description as well as an annotated list of multi-format resources on topics including:

  • Types 1 and 2 and gestational diabetes
  • Diet, clinical trials, and support sources
  • Legal and insurance issues

With this guide, librarians can deepen their understanding and collections, and thus improve service to the growing number of patrons affected by, at-risk for, or curious about this pervasive disease.

Medical Library Association (MLA)

Medical Library Association (MLA) is a nonprofit, educational organization of more than 1,100 institutions and 3,600 individual members in the health sciences information field, committed to educating health information professionals, supporting health information research, promoting access to the world's health sciences information, and working to ensure that the best health information is available to all.

"This outstanding book is a wonderful start for the general public, librarians, and practitioners looking for quality information for patients who have this disease … All health science libraries, public libraries, and hospital libraries should have this fantastic resource handy and on their shelves. With the online resources alone a tremendous number of website links can be provided to the public or to health care practitioners to get good information into the hands of those who need it."
— Journal of Electronic Resources in Medical Libraries

"The three types of diabetes discussed in this MLA guide affect patients at all stages of life. Identifying current, easily digestible information is crucial to helping patients and their families manage the disease and its effects ... One of the most useful features of this book is the layout and organization of the information. It is easy to navigate, and the clear, succinct sections offer providers a way to quickly hone in on relevant diabetes information in multiple formats. Healthcare providers who treat diabetes patients will find valuable recommendations to complement patient education materials in this title as well. In addition to being a go-to reference for current resources, this guide would be a useful tool for information providers who are interested in building or adding to a collection of diabetes or consumer health information for patients or library visitors."
