Learning Outcomes
Learners will:

  • Learn how to incorporate a Science Log into any existing Summer Reading Program with minimal fuss and expense. 
  • Learn about other ways to infuse science into Summer Reading Programs, including Preschool Stories and Science sessions, Tabletop Activities, and Science Classes. These optional activities support and build upon the core Science Log piece. 
  • See examples from an online Summer Science Toolkit of resources for developing programs and activities, including Science Logs, Preschool Stories and Science curricula, and Tabletop Activity resources. The Toolkit is reproducible and may be adapted by libraries at no cost.

Steven Engelfried

Steven Engelfried has been a Youth Librarian and ALSC member since 1986. He served on the 2002 Caldecott Committee and the 2010 Newbery Committee and chaired the 2013 Newbery Committee. He has overseen the Wilsonville Library's Summer Science Program since its debut in 2010.

For more than eight decades, librarians from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) have intensely scrutinized the children's books published each year, selecting the winning and honor books for the Newbery and Caldecott Awards. In addition, the ALSC division of the ALA is committed to creating a nation of readers, starting with the youngest. ALSC supports all those providing library services to children, including youth librarians, teachers, families, literature experts, publishers, and child advocates.
