Special Topics: Data Provenance Workshop
A 90-minute workshop, Monday, July 22, 2019, 12:00pm Eastern/11:00am Central/10:00 Mountain/9:00 Pacific

The new RDA defines data provenance as “information about the metadata recorded in an element or set of elements.” It provides both general guidance on how to record data provenance and specific instructions on how to record the provenance of different elements.

This webinar will address how RDA currently handles data provenance and preview its future treatment. The content will cover recording data provenance as it relates to sources of information, vocabulary encoding schemes, and string encoding schemes. It will encompass both the resource being described and the metadata work which describes that resource. Applications for and examples of data provenance will be provided in the context of current cataloging practice.

RDA Online Orientations
The RDA Online Orientations provide an introduction and illustrative examples to the many changes to RDA and the RDA Toolkit introduced during the 3R Project.  These series will provide a foundation of knowledge on which to optimize usage of the new and revised RDA and RDA Toolkit.

After participating in this event, you will:

  • Understand how data provenance is defined and scoped in the new RDA
  • Be aware of how data provenance is covered by the current RDA guidance and element set
  • Understand how data provenance is covered by the new RDA guidance and element set
  • Be aware of the reasons for changing how data provenance is handled by RDA
  • Understand the options for application of data provenance to current cataloguing contexts
