Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC)

The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association, is dedicated to the support and enhancement of library service to children. Its vision is for its members to engage communities to build healthy, successful futures for all children. For a century, ALSC members have carefully examined and discussed books published each year to recognize and honor the very best in children’s literature through its various awards, including the Newbery and Caldecott Medals. Through its work and resources, ALSC supports librarians serving youth, families, teachers, literature experts, and child advocates.

Steven Engelfried

Steven Engelfried has been a Youth Librarian and ALSC member since 1986. He served on the 2002 Caldecott Committee and the 2010 Newbery Committee and chaired the 2013 Newbery Committee. He has overseen the Wilsonville Library's Summer Science Program since its debut in 2010.

For more than eight decades, librarians from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) have intensely scrutinized the children's books published each year, selecting the winning and honor books for the Newbery and Caldecott Awards. In addition, the ALSC division of the ALA is committed to creating a nation of readers, starting with the youngest. ALSC supports all those providing library services to children, including youth librarians, teachers, families, literature experts, publishers, and child advocates.
