New Concepts: Fictitious and Non-human Personages Workshop
A 90-minute workshop, Wednesday, July 31, 2019, 12:00pm Eastern/11:00am Central/10:00 Mountain/9:00 Pacific

Fictitious and non-human personages (NHPs) as creators of resources have always been a knotty problem in cataloging. With the adoption of the IFLA Library Reference Model (LRM) by RDA, which disallows the use of NHPs as agents, the problem of how to categorize and assign access points for NHPs in bibliographic records has become a conundrum for catalogers. How do we, on the one hand, provide access to resources purportedly created by NHPs to assist our patrons in their tasks of finding, identifying, selecting, obtaining, and exploring, while adhering to the Library Reference Model and RDA? This online orientation will discuss the issues surrounding the use of fictitious and non-human personages in bibliographical records given the parameters of the LRM and RDA, the treatment of NHPs in RDA, and some possible solutions for catalogers to incorporate into their practice.

RDA Online Orientations
The RDA Online Orientations provide an introduction and illustrative examples to the many changes to RDA and the RDA Toolkit introduced during the 3R Project.  These series will provide a foundation of knowledge on which to optimize usage of the new and revised RDA and RDA Toolkit.

This workshop can also be purchased as a part of the New Concepts Workshop Series.

After participating in this event, you will:

  • Understand the treatment of fictitious characters and non-human personages in the LRM model;
  • Know how RDA does and does not address the issue of fictitious and non-human persons; and
  • Have strategies on how to include fictitious and non-human personages in LRM- and RDA-compliant bibliographical records.

While completing your purchase, fill in the name and e-mail address of the participant who will sign in to the event by clicking the "Attendees" button to the right of the item in your cart. This individual will receive an e-mail from WebEx confirming registration before the event begins. Attendees should add messenger@webex.com to their approved email sender list, so they can ensure that they receive the automatic notifications.

This is an online event hosted through WebEx. Further technical information is available at the ALA Store FAQ page.
