Getting the Most out of Student Interns and Volunteers Workshop
A 90-minute workshop, Wednesday, December 4, 2019, 2:30pm Eastern/1:30 Central/12:30 Mountain/11:30am Pacific

Student interns from Master’s in Library and Information Science or similar programs can be a huge asset for libraries of all sorts, and the on-the-job experience is invaluable for those students. But we want to ensure that it’s a valuable experience for the library as well. 

In this new workshop, Sonia Archer-Capuzzo and Kristi Bergland take you through the process of bringing interns into your library, from recruiting and identifying candidates to designing a program assessing your experience. To take full advantage of the skills and perspectives these students bring, site supervisors need to be prepared to mentor their interns—this webinar helps ensure that you get the most out of the experience.

By participating in this workshop you will:

  • Develop strategies to recruit students for internships or volunteer work.
  • Learn how to identify candidates who will fit your needs and culture.
  • Learn how to design a rewarding internship.

This is an online event hosted through WebEx. Further technical information is available at the ALA Store FAQ page.

Registrants, even if they miss the live session, are given access to an archive of the event for a period of 3 months from the date of the live session. The archive can be viewed at any time during this 3-month timeframe. The archive contains a video representation of the event, which includes all chat, audio, and visual material. In order to receive the archive information, please follow the instructions received upon purchase to confirm your registration in WebEx.

Dr. Sonia Archer-Capuzzo

Dr. Sonia Archer-Capuzzo is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Library and Information Science Department at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, where she teaches information organization and cataloging courses and Music Librarianship. She serves as the Practicum Liaison for the department, helping students design practicums and find sites for their field experience. Sonia previously worked as a cataloger and now teaches cataloging workshops, webinars, and e-courses for ALA Publishing, the Music Library Association, the State Library of North Carolina, and other organizations.

Dr. Kristi Bergland

Dr. Kristi Bergland is Music Metadata Librarian at the University of Minnesota, where she is responsible for cataloging music, ebooks, and streaming media, as well as supervising cataloging staff. Kristi has mentored students from local and regional library studies programs in both technical services and music specific field work.
