Known as an abolitionist, author, orator, editor and women’s suffragist, Frederick Douglass is a historical icon in the African American community and beyond. He started his life as a slave and fought hard to educate himself and learn to read and write. He was the first African-American Vice Presidential candidate in 1872 and fought tirelessly for equal rights for all, regardless of race or gender.
