In an era where digital information is ubiquitous and fake news is everywhere, training students to think critically regarding digital information is crucial. As information professionals, we are trained to analyze the authority and sourcing of information, and we need to provide our students with this same type of training so they can develop into media-literate practitioners.  

In this four-week eCourse, you’ll learn how to develop and enhance students’ critical information and digital literacy skills. The instructors share techniques and strategies for teaching students how to analyze and critique news and media sources that can apply in a variety of settings. You'll also get an opportunity to make immediate connections between the course content and your own professional environment. You will leave this course with specific lesson plans, activities, and assessments that you can use to help your students become media literate in today’s digital society.  

This course is recommended for academic librarians, K-12 librarians, and K-12 teachers. 

During your participation in this course, you will:

  • Discuss the necessity of connecting critical evaluation with analysis of news and media sources 
  • Develop a framework for guiding students in critical analysis of news and media sources 
  • Compare strategies for teaching students how to interact with a variety of media sources and modalities 
  • Design an assignment or project that requires students to use critical thinking to engage with current news and/or media sources

How this eCourse Works
The eCourse begins on January 6, 2020. Your participation will require approximately four to five hours a week, at times that fit your schedule. There are no live sessions. All activities take place on the website, and you will be expected to

  • Read, listen to or view online content
  • Post to online discussion boards
  • Complete weekly assignments or activities

Instructors Melissa Mallon and Megan Mallon will monitor discussion boards regularly during the 4-week period, lead group discussions, and will also answer individual questions. All interaction will take place on the eCourse site, which will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's recommended that students log into the site on the first day of class or within a few days for an overview of the content and to begin the first lesson.

User Requirements

Participants will need regular access to a computer with an internet connection for online message boards participation, viewing online video, listening to streaming audio (mp3 files), and downloading and viewing PDFs and PowerPoint files. ALA Publishing eLearning Solutions eCourses are fully compatible with Windows and MacOs.

Melissa Mallon

Melissa Mallon (MLIS) is Director of Peabody Education Library/ Director of Teaching & Learning at Vanderbilt University. Mallon’s research interests include online learning, instructional design, and the intersection of critical thinking and digital learning. She has presented on these topics at multiple forums, including ACRL and LOEX.

Megan Mallon

Megan Mallon (MS) is a 5th grade teacher at Bluemont School in Manhattan, KS, and a Teaching Assistant in the Masters of Arts in Teaching program at Kansas State University (KSU). She has mentored many pre-service teachers and collaborates with faculty at KSU on action research projects. She has presented on topics related to digital and media literacy at higher-ed and K-12 conferences.
