Digital reference practice has grown at an exponential rate and is fast becoming a part of routine library operations. In an attempt to supplement the outstanding grass-roots work with more generalizable and grounded research understanding, a Digital Reference Research Symposium was held on August 2002 at Harvard University with the stated objective of creating a research agenda that bridged the areas of digital reference, library practice, digital libraries, and computer science. This publication presents the proceedings of that symposium with detailed chapters on specific aspects of the agenda, including how digital reference relates to digital libraries, education for digital reference, question negotiation online, and the unique costs and benefits of digital reference. Current thinking and research in digital reference are drawn together to create a bridge between researchers and practitioners.
