With the proliferation of social media and commercially available genetic testing, the tools and techniques you can use to expand your research are growing rapidly. This brave new world presents technological, methodological, and ethical issues that can be tough to navigate.

In this eCourse, librarian and genealogy expert June Power will use her wealth of experience to take your research skills to the next level. You’ll explore techniques like incorporating historical newspaper research, using social media and Google Advanced search, DNA testing, digital court records, and more. You’ll leave this course with the expertise to navigate the genealogical research process in greater depth and detail.

How this eCourse Works
The eCourse begins on March 29, 2021. Your participation will require approximately four to five hours a week, at times that fit your schedule. There are no live sessions. All activities take place on the website, and you will be expected to

Post to online discussion boards
Complete weekly assignments or activities

Instructor June Power will monitor discussion boards regularly during the 6-week period, lead group discussions, and will also answer individual questions. All interaction will take place on the eCourse site, which will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's recommended that students log into the site on the first day of class or within a few days for an overview of the content and to begin the first lesson.

User Requirements

Participants will need regular access to a computer with an internet connection for online message boards participation, viewing online video, listening to streaming audio (mp3 files), and downloading and viewing PDFs and PowerPoint files. June Power is the Access Services Reference Librarian for The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, managing circulation, course reserves, document delivery services, and copyright management. She is the managing department head and has also assisted with archival and special collections work, and genealogy. She has presented at NCLA, the ILLiad Conference, the Ares Virtual Conference, the Azaela Coast Library Association Conference, and the Access Services Conference. She is on the editorial board for the Journal of Access Services and has published a series of articles in that journal as well as several book chapters.
