Whether you sought a management position or fell into one, you want to lead your library to success. Relevant for both new and seasoned managers, this advanced eCourse provides you with the knowledge, understanding, tools, and resources you need to succeed as a manager.

Drawing on over 30 years of library and management service, Wayne Disher provides practical, in-depth guidance on three broad administrative topics: your library organization, your library community, and our library in the 21st century. Throughout the course, you’ll learn how to manage structures, finances, people, and community relationships. 

After attending this course, you will be ready to apply your practical knowledge to just about any leadership role in today’s information profession.

Advanced Certificate of Completion

Participants who complete this Advanced eCourse will receive a SJSU iSchool/ALA Publishing Advanced Certificate of Completion. This certificate will affirm your status as having completed all the steps of an Advanced eCourse in Library Management and will provide proof of your participation that you can add to your resume.

How this eCourse Works
The eCourse begins on September 16, 2019. Your participation will require approximately four to five hours a week, at times that fit your schedule. There are no live sessions. All activities take place on the website, and you will be expected to

  • Read, listen to or view online content
  • Post to online discussion boards
  • Complete weekly assignments or activities

Instructor Wayne T. Disher will monitor discussion boards regularly during the 12-week period, lead group discussions, and will also answer individual questions. All interaction will take place on the eCourse site, which will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's recommended that students log into the site on the first day of class or within a few days for an overview of the content and to begin the first lesson.

User Requirements

Participants will need regular access to a computer with an internet connection for online message boards participation, viewing online video, listening to streaming audio (mp3 files), and downloading and viewing PDFs and PowerPoint files. ALA Publishing eLearning Solutions eCourses are fully compatible with Windows and MacOs.

Wayne T. Disher

Wayne T. Disher is a retired public Library Director for the City of Hemet Public Library. He served as President of the California Library Association in 2012. He received his Master of Library and Information Science degree at San José State University in 1994 and worked at San José Public Library System for 22 years managing library branches and units. Mr. Disher is the author of several library science textbooks, a library trainer, and a professional development speaker for library staff.
