In this 4-week eCourse, you’ll learn how to administer and promote over 40 types of revenue-generating methods designed to help your organization attain a better financial position. Instructor Ed Rossman—librarian and author of 40+ New Revenue Sources for Libraries and Nonprofits—will provide you with strategies to approach and develop prospect revenue-generating sources; share valuable tips on how to utilize new technologies, such as crowdfunding; and provide you with an understanding of legalities and tax issue concerns, reinforced by real-world case studies.

Using familiar examples from the media, Rossman will illustrate existing opportunities in libraries that will help strengthen your library’s revenue and community partnerships. You’ll come away from the course with the ability to establish proper value for various products and services, create supportive internal mechanisms, and generate promotional materials that will aid you in finding and generating new revenue sources for your library.

 

After participating in this eCourse, you will be able to:

  • Easily implement the first steps of over 40 types of revenue-generating methods;
  • Assess fair price and market value for sales of sponsorships, naming rights, and other products;
  • Provide guidelines and examples of how to write board policies and comprehensive contracts in a tool-kit approach that will make the sales process more efficient for libraries of all types and sizes to use; and
  • Produce effective customized sales promotional packages using both the benefits and features of what is offered.

How this eCourse Works

The eCourse begins on November 4, 2019. Your participation will require approximately six hours a week, at times that fit your schedule. All activities take place on the website, and you will be expected to:

  • Read, listen to or view online content
  • Post to online discussion boards
  • Complete weekly assignments or activities

Instructor Ed Rossman will monitor discussion boards regularly during the 4-week period, lead group discussions, and will also answer individual questions. All interaction will take place on the eCourse site, which will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's recommended that students log into the site on the first day of class or within a few days for an overview of the content and to begin the first lesson.This eCourse is licensed for a single user.

User Requirements

Participants will need regular access to a computer with an internet connection for online message boards participation, viewing online video, listening to streaming audio (mp3 files), and downloading and viewing PDFs and PowerPoint files. ALA Publishing eLearning Solutions eCourses are fully compatible with Windows and MacOs.

Week 1: Prospect and Product Development

  • Use discovery techniques to find 25 prospects near your location
  • Do a location audit to determine potential impressions delivered
  • Gather statistics on circulation and other library metrics
  • Review 5 fast track methods to generate revenue within a few months

Week 2: Preparing the Pitch

  • Review annual reports and how they could be changed into a sales proposal
  • Learn the basic terminology and concepts related to advertising, including client relationship management and contract language
  • Assess value for a sale of sponsorship or naming rights
  • Review first steps of methods based on advertising and sponsorships

Week 3: Development of 10 Methods of New revenue

  • Review first steps of program based revenue methods.
  • Produce effective customized sales promotional packages using both benefits and features of what is offered for program based revenue methods.
  • Choose a potential sponsor, match with a revenue method, and create a proposal.

Week 4: Crowdfunding Design—Developing 10 More Methods

  • Review first steps of service based revenue methods
  • Produce effective customized sales promotional packages using both benefits and features of what is offered for service based revenue methods
  • Look for example crowd funding efforts in their local area; report results based on 6 key elements of crowd funding
  • Create your own crowd funding proposal; give support statements on your decision making

Ed Rossman

Ed Rossman has been involved with libraries and broadcasting since 1980.  Now retired, he was an Adult Service Librarian in Shaker Heights, Ohio and chair of the Business Reference in Public Libraries committee of BRASS. His book, Castles Against Ignorance: How to Make Libraries Great Educational Environments is in over 70 libraries and consortia throughout the world. He has taught courses on the internet and mass media for the Kent State School of Journalism, and is currently teaching online courses on Business Writing for libraries at Kent State. As a business manager of radio stations in two major markets, he coordinated dozens of sponsorship campaigns, as well as produced over 200 hours of sponsored, specialty programming.
