More and more libraries are working to organize their own library camps or “unconferences” – open, friendly and refreshingly informal gatherings for librarians to unite, exchange ideas, and share knowledge. Library Camps and Unconferences provides you with the practical, step-by-step guidance you need to bring your vision of organizing a library camp to life. Author Steve Lawson walks you through the process from start to finish, with guidance for setting a date and location, organizing important technological components, planning events, and gathering equipment. You’ll find advice for setting a budget, marketing your camp, and conference-day management, as well as tips for dealing with unexpected problems and methods for evaluating your camp’s success. Whether you’ve planned library camps before or you’re a first time organizer, this title in THE TECH SET® series will enable a thought provoking, productive, and friendly event for you and your LIS peers.
About the Author

Steve Lawson is currently the Humanities Liaison Librarian at Colorado College. He has a Bachelor of Science in Speech from Northwestern University, where he studied theater, and a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Texas at Austin’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science, where he studied rare books, archives, and special collections. Prior to coming to Colorado College in 2003, he worked in the Science and Engineering Library at the University of California, San Diego. In recent years, his professional interests have included low-overhead, informal methods of professional development for librarians, such as library camps and unconferences and online communities. Steve is co-Carping Nerdboy of the Library Society of the World (LSW), editor of the LSW Zine, sponsor of the LSW Shovers and Makers awards. His next project is likely to look at how the future of librarians was depicted by librarians before the age of the personal computer.

"Lawson's guide offers an excellent overview of the participant-driven conference and practical advice for anyone interested in organizing such an event. Even for librarians who are not planning to host a library camp or unconference in the near future, this book is an intriguing and informative read for those who are curious about the concept and how it works."
--Journal of the Medical Library Association

"Almost everything an LIS profesional needs to know about library camps and 'unconferences'…can be found in this immensely readable and practical book .. highly recommended."
--The Australian Library Journal

"Recommended for any library interested in either attending or hosting an unconference event."
--Library Journal

"There is no other book out there on unconferences for the library world. Library or library association staff who are organizing or thinking about organizing an event would do well to consult this book."
--Stephen Francoeur, Information Services Librarian and Assistant Professor at Baruch College
