Social networking is rapidly infiltrating the information environment, and it is essential that librarians understand how best to use these sites and tools with their work to better serve their users and reach people who have never before used the library. A Social Networking Primer for Librarians gives librarians a start-to-finish guide to the basics for using and maximizing popular social networking sites in all types of libraries. From planning and implementation to best practices to evaluation, author Cliff Landis provides highly practical, easy-to-follow guidelines for using MySpace, Facebook, and other prominent sites as a way to expand and improve crucial library functions like instruction, outreach, service delivery, and marketing. Landis also provides additional recommended print, online, and interactive resources to help further development. The discussion is accessible to the novice who wants to learn the technology and how to implement it, as well as the seasoned pro charged with translating best practice examples to the local setting and quantifying the results.

"Landis' basic step-by-step instructions, supported by illustrations and examples, will enable even the least confident individual to create a MySpace account and a Facebook account, manage settings, add applications, and build a community. Readers will find the easy-to-read information and instructions accessible both as individual users and for planning and implementing effective library services with them."
The Australian Library Journal

"This book is written for librarians in all types of settings. However … the emphasis on reaching out to users, promoting services, and building community could easily be applied across many disciplines. Those who wish to incorporate social networking into their daily services will find this to be a valuable guidebook."
Journal of the Medical Library Association

"The marketing chapter is quite good, describing branding, marketing plans, and ‘push-and-pull’ marketing … The book's content is valuable."
Reference & User Services Quarterly

"Landis (technology librarian, Valdosta State Univ.) provides step-by-step instructions for creating user accounts, managing privacy settings, installing and developing add-on applications, adding widgets to integrate chat reference and library blogs, and building community events."
Library Journal

"I found this to be an easy and approachable read. I think it should prove a popular introduction to this increasingly important area of outreach."
Paul R. Pival, Public Services Systems Librarian, University of Calgary
