About the Authors
José-Marie Griffiths is Vice President for Academic Affairs and University Professor at Bryant
University in Rhode Island. Her research spans more than 30 years in information science and
technology. She has performed groundbreaking work in a wide range of areas. This research
and leadership is reflected in several books and more than 100 other publications.
Griffiths’s accomplishments have been recognized by several prestigious appointments
and awards, including three presidential appointments and service on many blue-ribbon panels
and committees. She was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement
of Science and received the Award of Merit and the Research Award from the American
Society for Information Science and Technology and was also named one of the Top 25 Women
on the Web in 1999. Griffiths completed her undergraduate degree in Physics with honors and a PhD in Information Science from University College London.
Donald W. King is currently Honorary University Professor at Bryant University in Rhode
Island and an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee School of Information Sciences.
King, a statistician, cofounded Westat, Inc., a statistical consulting and survey research
company, in 1961 and served as president of three research companies—King Research,
Home Testing Institute, and Westat Surveys—until the mid-1990s. After retiring, he continued
research on a pro bono basis with Drs. José-Marie Griffiths and Carol Tenopir. King’s 50
years in research have emphasized economic cost modeling and surveys dealing with libraries
and scholarly publishing, as well as marketing research and political polling. His numerous
publications include 17 books (4 award-winning) and more than 150 other publications.
King’s work been recognized by the Chemical Heritage Foundation (Pioneer in Science
Information), the American Statistical Association (Fellow), and the American Society for
Information Science and Technology (Research Award and Award of Merit), and has received
many other awards and honors. He received a BS and MS in statistics from the University of Wyoming (1959, 1960).
