A fully bilingual publication in English and Spanish, this title will help technical services librarians expand their ability to serve Spanish-speaking library users and will enlighten readers on the challenges involved in serving multi- or cross-cultural populations. All of the contributors were presenters at a SAC/REFORMA-sponsored program at ALA Annual Conference in 2004.

Explores current and historical efforts to provide Spanish-language or bilingual subject access to users, mainly in North and Central America, but also outside this area. Topics include the Bilindex project, Spanish translations of the Sears List, the development of several different Spanish-language subject headings lists, and the impact of Spanish subject headings on information services for Hispanic/Latino populations.

Details the impacts on the library profession of providing bilingual subject access, beyond the obvious need for Spanish-language vocabulary. like the impacts of distinctive linguistic and cultural settings on the process of constructing Spanish versions of essential bibliographical tools, standards, and guidelines, including AACR2, MARC formats, DDC and LCSH.

Explains cross-cultural implications of providing bilingual subject access such as developing a Mexican Subject Headings list by bringing together the work of the National Library of Mexico and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, a regional initiative to develop authority control for Spanish subject headings, and the “Lista de Encabezamientos de Materia para Bibliotecas,” a major Spanish subject heading system developed in Colombia.
