" . . . [the library] is no more to be thrown open to the ravages of the unreasoning Mob than is a Fair Garden to be laid unprotected at the Mercy of a Swarm of Beasts."—Jared Bean, The Old Librarian's Almanac, 1773

Maverick librarian Margaret Edwards not only threw open the gates of her fair garden of literary treasures, but she spent a life's work luring in the beasts. The Centennial Edition of this young adult services masterpiece authored by the 20th century's most revolutionary librarian presents an accessible and relevant work for the YA librarian of the 21st century.

With a new introduction by Betty Carter, readers have the unique opportunity to consider today's trends in the Edwards context. This edition also includes an annotated list of all the Alex award-winning and nominated books, and the Margaret A. Edwards award-winning books. No young adult librarian's shelf is complete without this flagship YA services classic and now the updated, must-have Centennial Edition.

About the Author
Margaret Alexander Edwards is a pioneer and a legend in the field of young adult librarianship. Often referred to as the "patron saint of young adult services," she was one of the first librarians to recognize the importance of specialized services that address the particular needs of young adults. Her philosophies and practices, as illustrated in The Fair Garden and the Swarm of Beasts, have influenced and inspired generations of librarians since it's original publication in 1969, and continue to be a foundation for today's new young adult librarians.

Betty Carter is Professor Emerita in the School of Library and Information Studies at Texas Woman's University. An avid reader of young adult books growing up in Raleigh, North Carolina, Carter has maintained that commitment to young adult literature during her many years of service as a YALSA board member and author of Best Books for Young Adults.
Reviews
“One might ask just how relevant a book about library services to teenagers originally published in 1969 could be in 2003. The answer is that the more things change the more they stay the same...the enthusiasm and straightforward advice is as timely today as it was more than 30 years ago.”
—Orana

"Required reading for both young adult specialists and generalists."—Public Libraries
