Only a small fraction of libraries can afford full-time young adult librarians. Yet if your library is like most, a quarter of your patrons are young adults, twelve to eighteen years old. Bare Bones Young Adult Services: Tips for Public Library Generalists offers a quick-start guide to superior service for staff and librarians who must fill the gap.

Informed by YALSA’s popular Serving the Underserved workshops, this handbook answers all the common questions generalists have about working with teens. A friendly, modular design invites you to scan in stolen moments and pick up such tips as:
  • the seven developmental needs of young adults;
  • how to interact with teens;
  • readers advisory services for teens;
  • how to evaluate Web sites;
  • forms for coordinating homework support with schools and parents; and
  • strategies for dealing with troublesome behavior.
With expert advice on what’s most important, your bare bones service won’t be skimpy.

    Reviews
    “This manual belongs on the professional shelf of every library—whether or not it has a young adult department or young adult librarian. It should also be available at every university offering a graduate degree in library science. It is the most basic, affordable guide on how to set up, expand, and/or improve library materials and services to teens.”
    —VOYA

    “This outstanding resource provides answers to the basic questions that generalists may have about reference and reads' advisory services to young adults... Seasoned young adult librarians may also get some fresh ideas from this extremely useful tool which belongs in all public library professional collections.”
    —School Library Journal

    “The author of this helpful guide comes to the task with a strong, lengthy background in young adult services... I would recommend this book for professional librarians in whatever type library.”
    —Catholic Library World

    “The style is clear and straightforward, making for easy reading... [T]his book would be a useful addition to staff libraries and would particularly help young professionals working with young adults for the first time. University libraries which support teaching programs in information management and library science should also consider including this book in their collections.”
    —Orana
