In this Advanced eCourse, Dr. Sue Alman—an experienced instructor and expert in interpersonal communication—will explore some of the factors that affect interpersonal communications. Within the week-by-week format, you will be able to work at your own pace and interact with the instructor through emails and message boards without the constraints of attending a live session at a specific time.


How this eCourse Works

The eCourse begins on September 12, 2016. Your participation will require approximately six hours a week, at times that fit your schedule. All activities take place on the website, and you will be expected to:

  • Listen to the weekly, recorded presentation and review the resources.
  • Participate actively in class discussions by posting recorded comments to the weekly VoiceThread discussions.
  • Keep a personal journal that focuses on interpersonal communication insights gained through readings and discussions.
  • Participate in a group project that will culminate in a class presentation on a topic such as:
    • Conflict Facilitation
    • Mentoring/Coaching
    • Managing Up
    • Listening Techniques
    • Generational Issues in the Workplace
    • Develop a LibGuide™ or electronic poster on a topic related to interpersonal communications (This may be done individually or with 1 or 2 others in the class)

Instructor Dr. Sue Alman will monitor discussion boards regularly during the 12-week period, lead group discussions, and will also answer individual questions. All interaction will take place on the eCourse site, which will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's recommended that participants log into the site on the first day of class or within a few days for an overview of the content and to begin the first lesson.


User Requirements

Participants will need regular access to a computer with an internet connection for online message boards participation, viewing online video, listening to streaming audio (mp3 files), and downloading and viewing PDFs and PowerPoint files.

About the Instructor

Dr. Sue Alman joined the faculty at the San Jose State University School of Information in 2012 after a career at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Information Sciences, where she taught and served as Director of Online Learning. Among her areas of teaching specialization are interpersonal communications, library marketing and public relations, futures studies, and leadership and management. In Fall 2014, she led a MOOC, The Emerging Future: Technology Issues and Trends, that attracted over 1700 global participants, and she organized the Library 2.015 Spring Summit, The Emerging Future: Technology and Learning. Her investigation of interpersonal relationships and personality type began as a doctoral student with Dr. Sara Fine, and she has continued to lead synchronous and asynchronous courses on communication techniques for nearly 30 years.
