After participating in this eCourse, you will:
- Understand the five commonly observed early childhood developmental domains and how these domains are impacted by early childhood public library programs
- Be able to plan library programs which use best practices to foster early literacy skill development
- Be able to connect early literacy and school readiness skills through early childhood programming which connects to the needs of children, families, early care and education facilities, and communities to better prepare children for successful entry into kindergarten
If you perform and develop programming for preschool children and families, knowing the basics of early literacy training will help you create a school readiness program that will best prepare children for a successful transition into kindergarten. Early care expert and education trainer R. Lynn Baker's successful approach to school readiness programming connects school readiness indicators and early childhood standards with early literacy best practices. In this four-week eCourse, Baker will guide you through the ins and outs of developing early childhood programs through discussion boards, pre/post-tests, assignments, and readings. You’ll walk away with tools for connecting developmentally appropriate principles of early childhood development with the early literacy skills/best practices of Every Child Ready to Read® (ECRR) 1 and 2.
This eCourse will also provide professional programming knowledge to those seeking professional development opportunities for certification/recertification hours.*

How this eCourse Works
The eCourse begins on June 5, 2017. Your participation will require approximately six hours a week, at times that fit your schedule. All activities take place on the website, and you will be expected to:
- Read, listen to or view online content
- Post to online discussion boards
- Complete weekly assignments or activities
Instructor R. Lynn Baker will monitor discussion boards regularly during the four-week period, lead group discussions, and will also answer individual questions. All interaction will take place on the eCourse site, which will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's recommended that students log into the site on the first day of class or within a few days for an overview of the content and to begin the first lesson.
Participants will need regular access to a computer with an internet connection for online message boards participation, viewing online video, listening to streaming audio (mp3 files), and downloading and viewing PDFs and PowerPoint files. ALA Editions eCourses are fully compatible with Windows and MacOs.

About the Instructor
R. Lynn Baker is a conference speaker and advocate for early childhood education, early literacy/school readiness programs, and public libraries. As a former preschool and kindergarten teacher, she holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education and a minor in Special Education. Lynn received her MLIS from San Jose State University, and holds a professional librarian certification from the Kentucky State Board for the Certification of Librarians. She has developed school readiness programs and curricula for public libraries, early care and education providers, preschool children, families, and communities. Lynn is a Youth Services Librarian and Chair of the READiness Matters school readiness public library initiative in the state of Kentucky. Lynn is the author of Counting Down to Kindergarten: A Complete Guide for Creating a School Readiness Program for Your Community, published by ALA in 2015.
